Rimidi’s Top Takeaways from ViVE and HIMSS 2022

News | March 28th, 2022

For many, March has been the busiest month of healthcare technology events in the two-plus years since the pandemic started. HIMSS and the inaugural ViVE event took place back-to-back and were packed full of healthcare experts demonstrating new capabilities, sharing successes and challenges in panel sessions and making major product and partnership announcements.

After spending two weeks networking and connecting with industry leaders, we have put together our top takeaways and favorite themes from both events.

SMART-on-FHIR Applications Building on EHRs

95% of healthcare organizations have implemented EHRs - creating a sort of ‘electronic foundation’ for the industry. As early pioneers of SMART on FHIR, we know that as more health systems and hospitals inch closer to full digitization, the industry will ultimately be completely digitally native. The vision of an ecosystem of apps and interfaces that overlay the EHR foundation is becoming a reality. Rimidi’s apps can be fully integrated with your EHR, making it easy to integrate with existing workflows, thus minimizing clicks and optimizing insights. As we enter our 10th year as FHIR pioneers, we’re eager to continue paving the way for the rest of the industry with a continued focus on achieving true interoperability.

A Long-Term Strategy for Remote Patient Monitoring

Before the HIMSS event in 2020, we predicted that remote patient monitoring technology would be heavily discussed and would finally get off the ground - and we were right. What none of us could have predicted was the acceleration of RPM and telemedicine adoption that would be driven by the pandemic. Our discussions this month focused on the long-term strategy for RPM as a sustained and strategic component of the new model of healthcare delivery. In fact, Gartner’s vice president analyst, Mandi Bishop has stated that, by 2025, 40% of the nation’s care providers will have shifted 20% of their hospital beds to the home, driven by remote patient monitoring.

As a leading remote patient monitoring solution, which was recently recognized as one of the top five connected platforms in AVIA Connect’s Top 50 Remote Patient Monitoring Companies, our FHIR-enabled RPM platform integrates seamlessly with most major EHRs to deliver better workflows, experiences, and outcomes.

The Move Toward and Successful Implementation of CDS Hooks

While at ViVE and HIMSS, I had the pleasure of speaking with interoperability leaders at CareJourney, CARIN Alliance, and others at the FHIR Roundtable on Clinical Decision Support (CDS) Hooks. With further adoption of clinical decision support systems in coming years, Rimidi’s CDS solution built on CDS Hooks is leading the way in terms of commercial implementation of this standard. Rimidi’s configurable to support a variety of use cases including national practice guidelines, remote monitoring workflows, and referral management, all within the native EHR experience.

Done right, CDS can truly deliver on the promise of fostering both guideline-driven and equity-driven care that improves outcomes and the overall health of everyone, and we’re happy that our solution easily operates within EHRs, presenting providers with care suggestions that align with their practice’s protocols.

Showcasing Continuous Glucose Monitoring

At both events, we featured our latest medical device integration - Abbott’s Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring system. With this new integration, patients can share their Libre CGM data with their healthcare provider through Rimidi, which is available in the existing EHR workflow. To fully support our efforts and connect to consumers, I also showcased the Libre integration myself by wearing the CGM on the showroom floor.

Given that diabetes remains such a major focus for the industry, as over 37 million people in the U.S. are currently living with diabetes, adoption of continuous glucose monitoring by a broader set of consumers and across a wider group of healthcare providers is inevitable. Making this data more accessible and actionable in clinical workflows is paramount to supporting this growth.

As the healthcare industry continues to advance, technology such as SMART-on-FHIR, RPM, CDS hooks and glucose monitoring will be at the forefront of innovations that can be used to improve clinical workflows, experiences, and patient outcomes.
