Advantages of Outsourced Remote Patient Monitoring for Healthcare Providers

News | November 30th, 2023

During 2023, we’ve seen labor shortages in hospitals and healthcare systems drive some of the biggest limitations within patient care and management. This trend won’t be ending anytime soon either. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the U.S. will face a shortage of 195,400 nurses by 2031.

Between growing rates of chronic conditions, increased cost of care delivery, recruitment struggles, and an aging workforce, something needs to change.

Fortunately, technology like remote patient monitoring (RPM), lends a helping hand in combating these current issues by extending care beyond the four walls of the doctor’s office. While the right RPM software can improve clinical staff efficiency, some health care providers are turning to outsourced clinical teams who specialize in RPM to support their limited staff and growing population of patients with chronic conditions.

What is Outsourced Remote Patient Monitoring?

In 2020, the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule introduced updates to CPT codes 99457 and 99458, allowing RPM services to be delivered “incident to” a physician’s service under general supervision – aka the billing physician and clinical staff performing RPM services do not need to physically reside in the same building. This rule allows providers to choose whether they: (1) keep their RPM services in-house or (2) outsource their services while still receiving the same reimbursements.

With outsourcing, providers can partner with a third-party vendor to provide RPM services. In turn, vendors can provide all key components to RPM including:

  • Patient education and device setup
  • Patient communication
  • Data review
  • Patient triage

By partnering with a third party vendor who provides all of the above, practices and health systems can maintain a high level of care for their patients without adding more daily tasks, disrupting existing workflows, or hiring more staff.
